The entire series of marine life idendification books by Dan Gotshall are indespensable for divers and marine naturalists.
Marc Shargel learned a lot of biology from Lovell & Libby Langstroth. Their book A Living Bay, contains marvelous photographic illustrations of Monterey Bay marine life with fascinating natural history interpretation of the natural histories of their photographic subjects.
Between Pacific Tides now in its Fifth edition, this is Edward F. Ricketts' seminal book. Co-authored and updated by Joel W. Hedgpeth, Jack Calvin, and David Phillips, it still contains the original foreword by Ricketts' friend John Steinbeck. It essentially introduced the notion of ecosystem-level marine biology and inspired the ecosystem-based management science that led to the MLPA.
