Photo Class
Learn to Use Your Own Camera to Create
Photography Beyond Snapshots
This is a class for novice photographers through advanced snapshooters. If you like to take pictures and leave your camera on "Auto," but wonder why you get the results you get, this is for you. In this class you'll learn:
-

 |
|
That's going to be a great shot! But what could this photographer do—in one second—to get a more dramatic result? Answer in the meeting on "composition." |
|
How to use your camera on the manual or "M" setting.
- How to use the shutter speed control to render moving subjects the way you want.
- How to use the aperture control (f-stop) to change the "feel" of your photos (D.O.F).
- How shutter speed and aperture (f-stop) interact with each other (E.V.)
- How to fine-tune exposure using digital photo analysis
- How to use strobe lighting to fix viewers' attention
- How to use and ignore the "laws" of photographic composition to produce compelling images
- Scratch-the-surface introduction to digital photo retouching
- Dip-under-the-surface discussion of underwater photography
You'll need
- Your own digital camera, of any age or type, as long as it offers a Manual or "M" setting and direct control of shutter speed and aperture (f-stop).
- An internet-connected device that will allow you to use Zoom (I suggest something larger than a smart phone as we'll be viewing photos).
- To pay the class fee, $280 for you, $240 for members of your family.
- A sense of humor: we're going to learn from each other's mistakes (including mine), so don't take yours too seriously.

Here's a photographer dealing with limited sunlight, strobe lighting, and composition—all while underwater.

At each meeting we will also
- Have a photo assignment to do between meetings—homework—which you'll be able to do in about 20 minutes.
- Deconstruct the results of the week's photo assignment
- Learn to shoot better by assessing what worked and what didn't in our own photos and each other's
- Laugh a lot
Class Schedule
This will be a "Thursday Night Camera Club." We'll meet on Zoom on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm (Pacific Standard Time) until about 9pm. Not too long, only about 90 minutes each time.
