A Crevice Kelpfish, with tail curved behind itself, displays camouflage markings, helping it blend in with the surrounding red coralline algae.

Photographed at Coral Gardens, Anacapa Island, Channel Islands National Mari in Southern California on September 2, 1997 with a Canon F1n in Aquatica Housing, 100mm macro lens, Ikelite 150 & MS strobe. Fuji Velvia.

Additional Information About the Natural History of this Subject
The ID of this fish as Crevice Kelpfish is only probable. There are three other species in the genus Gibbonsia which are very similar. They are G. elegans, the Spotted Kelpfish, G. erythra, the Scarlet Kelpfish, and G. metzi, the Striped Kelpfish. Our ID of this fish at G. montereyensis is based on the body color pattern (which is variable) and a rough estimate of the size of the pectoral fins.
