Monarch Butterfly Danaus
plexippus
Monarch Butterflies visit Santa Cruz every winter in their annual migration. Monarchs travel thousands of miles each year, but no single generation can make the entire trip. Monarch population numbers have plunged 50-90% since the late 1990s, largely due to destruction of their obligatory feeding habitat: milkweed.
Photographed at Natural Bridges State Park, Santa Cruz, CA in Central California on February 26, 2022 with a D7200, 80-400mm VR lens.
